Behind the Lens

Chapter 1

2020 was a year of challenges, and it was no different for Jo and the Pear Tree Photography.

But, with constraints come opportunities, so we have used this time to learn something new, grow, and help other businesses in the process.

One of these businesses was Peace & Plenty Home® by Rachel Lloyd. Rachel is an upcycler from Canterbury, dedicated to taking tired, worn furniture and masterfully bringing it back to life with bold new colours and finishes. The result is a fresh look for those seeking one-of-a-kind pieces for their home.

The work we did for Peace & Plenty Home® was focused on still-life imagery for social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, and Etsy). For this work we sought to use as much natural light as possible, as it was important to show the public the true impact of how these items would appear in the home (without adding visual effects via Photoshop).

Despite the restrictions in place that fluctuated regularly during the project, we worked in tune, collaborating via WhatsApp, email, phone calls, and set design via boards shared on Pinterest.

“I think your home should be full of furniture you love - whether it’s a vintage piece brought back to life or a unique style, designed just for you. I upcycle a mix of used furniture, old and waste materials, and unwanted products into new home furnishings. I am proud of my work and I wanted this to be translated to images for online advertising. Roberto worked with the branding image I had in mind, and worked closely with me to bring my vision and style to life. I am delighted with the result, and will be working with him again in the future.”

We were responsible for the image and production direction, however this collaborative working style gave the client space for her opinion and style preferences. Working side-by-side with the client was the best part of this process, and knowing that we were helping to launch this great small business to the general public.
